"O L-RD, Who are my power and my strength and my refuge in the day of trouble, to You nations will come from the ends of the earth and say, 'Only lies have our fathers handed down to us, emptiness in which there is nothing of any avail! Can a man make gods for himself, and they are no gods? 'Therefore, behold I let them know; at this time I will let them know My power and My might, and they shall know that My Name is the L-RD".
Jeremiah 16:19-21

Morons in the Hands of an Angry God …

On August 28th, 1859 in Titusville, Pennsylvania, a man named Billy Smith discovered crude petroleum rising in a hole he had been drilling for a man named Edwin Drake. Drake had came up with an ingenious plan to drill for oil. Instead of simply drilling a shaft into the earth (which either collapsed or flooded), he put in sections of pipe to keep the narrow shaft open, and he was able to drill through the bedrock by putting the drill through the pipe. This was the world’s first modern oil well, and although it was only 21 meters (69.5 feet) deep, it was deep enough to successfully pump a continuous supply of oil from the oil fields of Pennsylvania. The oil age had begun.

That very same day, August 28th, 1859, on the other side of the Atlantic, a British astronomer named Richard Carrington noticed a marked increase in solar activity. There was a noticeable spike in sunspots and solar flares. A few days later, on September 1, just before noon, Carrington observed a major coronal mass ejection—a huge solar flare—that was pointing directly to earth. Just seventeen hours later (yes #1, seventeen) this gigantic mass of plasma hit the earth’s magnetic field. The aurorae from this electromagnetic storm were seen around the world as far south as Cuba. The aurorae were so bright that people in New England could read their newspapers in the middle of the night just from the glow of the aurorae. Gold miners in the Rocky Mountains started cooking breakfast in the middle of the night, thinking that it was morning.

It was the most spectacular aurora borealis in modern times. Scientists have since discovered (by analyzing ice core samples from Greenland) that CMEs (Coronal Mass Ejections) this size occur every 500 or so years. In the past, it meant a spectacular light show, but not much more. However, if something akin to the Carrington Event occurred today…

For fire will have been kindled in My nostrils and blazed to the lowest depths. It shall consume the earth and its produce, and set ablaze what is founded on mountains. — Deuteronomy 32:22, the verse for the Torah year 5774 which begins on September 5, 2013.

There was one other odd occurrence of the Carrington Event. During the Event, telegraph systems failed across America and Europe. Telegraph operators were shocked (literally). The telegraph wires caught fire and the pylons sparked. Even when the telegraph operators disconnected from the power supply, they were still able to transmit and receive signals as massive amounts of electromagnetic energy surged through the telegraph wires. Nothing like that had ever been seen before, or since.

Why should this concern us? Solar weather occurs in eleven year cycles. Sunspot activity ramps up, then dies down. The last solar minimum, however, was a bit odd; the sun was much quieter than usual, and the solar minimum lasted longer than usual. The last time this oddity of the solar cycle occurred was…you guessed it…in 1859. Scientists at NASA are saying that conditions will be ripe for another possible Carrington Event next year in 2013.

Although some scientists downplay the destruction of another Carrington Event, there are plenty of other scientists who disagree [click HERE]. A CME the size of the one in 1859 could fry not only our satellites, but our entire electrical grid. The large industrial transformers our electrical system depends on would be toast, and since each one of these take many months to build, and the US does not manufacture them and there are not very many sitting on the shelves, our electrical grid could be out for years. We are talking about something a bit more serious than our iphones not working; imagine if most of the population in the United States is suddenly and permanently without fresh, clean water. Or food. Or medical facilities. You get the picture: mass hysteria, cats and dogs living together, etc.

The point of all of this is that, with all of our petty bickering about political debates and the minor differences between the presidential candidates, we seem to lose sight of the big picture. Neither party is interested in serious change. Neither party is interested in the Torah. We are not interested in doing what has been commanded us, to create courts of law based on the Noahide Code and the Torah. We ignore the teachings of the sages who tell us that, based on many prophesies such as Deuteronomy 32 and Isaiah 34, Edom will be totally destroyed. Since the sages agree that modern Edom is Rome/Western Christendom, and the United States is the leader of this Roman/Western Christendom/Western Civilization/Edom, it might behoove us to spend some time contemplating what is really at stake for our civilization right now.

Ignoring the implications of Peak Oil and the end of the Oil Age are bad enough, but there are too many uncomfortable things in the Tanach that point to a spectacular and sudden demise of Edom. It was an odd coincidence of history that these two events, the beginning of the Oil Age and the Carrington Event, occurring on the same weekend. It would be another “coincidence” if a second Carrington Event were to occur, putting an end to the Oil Age and our civilization. Instead of the bickering over which candidate is more worthy, perhaps we should be focusing on the real problems of our society and work together to fix them…before it is too late.

Nations, come near to hear, and kingdoms, hearken. The earth and the fullness thereof, the world and all its offspring. For HaShem has indignation against all the nations and wrath against all their host. He has destroyed them; He has given them to the slaughter. And their slain ones shall be thrown, and their corpses—their stench shall rise, and mountains shall melt from their blood. And all the host of heaven shall melt, and the heavens shall be rolled like a scroll, and all their host shall wither as a leaf withers from a vine, and as a withered fig from a fig tree. For My sword has become sated in the heaven. Behold, it shall descend upon Edom, and upon the nation with whom I  contend, for judgment. — Isaiah 34:1–5.
